TA’IZ, YEMEN, JULY 18, 2015
Hind’s house was seriously damaged by an airstrike on July 18, 2015. Not long thereafter, Hind and seven of her family members moved to San’a from Ta’iz after the escalation of ground combat between different militias made life unbearable in their neighborhood, Ta’iz al-Rawdah.
“It was 9:30 p.m., and the whole family was gathered in our home to celebrate the second day of Eid. My sister, my cousin, and I were sitting together when we suddenly heard a very loud noise followed by an intensely bright, yellow light which the filled the room even though we had the lights on.”
“As we reached the staircase to the first floor, smoke and dust from the debris started to fill the house to the point that we could not breathe. The smell of the missile’s aftermath was suffocating. We were terrified to turn on any lights as they could attract further strikes.”
“We moved to San’a as life is relatively safer and easier there than it was in Ta’iz, where we were not allowed to turn our lights on for fear of becoming targets. There, we could not even go out to get food sometimes. If we did get the chance to go and get food, we would be stopped if we were seen having too much.
As for our house in Ta’iz, we have not been back. Our neighbors say it has been completely ruined, the walls that remain are full of bullet holes and missile shrapnel. The only pictures we have are from just after the air raid. Now our neighbors say that the situation on the ground is worse and they cannot risk taking new photos for us, as anyone even suspected of taking pictures or holding a camera in public will be shot by snipers immediately.”
