BALKAM VILLAGE, AL-TUHAYTA DISTRICT, HUDAYDAH, YEMEN, SEPTEMBER 10, 2018

Ahmed Hassan and his family used to live in al-Tuhayta District, near the historical city of Zabid, one of the most heavily contested areas of the war’s western front. His family was forced to leave after repeated air raids from coalition jets.

“On the September 10, 2018, at 2 a.m., we heard the jets flying very close to the ground right over our heads. We heard explosions from the airstrikes nearby so we ran out of our house to save ourselves and our children, along with two other families from my neighborhood.

Right as we left our residence, our house was hit and reduced to ashes. All the neighboring houses were destroyed too.”

Ahmed’s wife describes the difficulties her family faces now:

“Losing our home, and the fact that we cannot go back to al-Tuhayta because it is still an active site of ground combat and airstrikes, along with being displaced keeps adding to the mental and economic deterioration of the family as a whole.

Now, displaced to the al-Jam’a in Zabid, we are currently living a very harsh life, especially since my husband has lung disease and is unable to work. We barely have one meal a day, two if we’re very lucky.”
